Menstrual disc - what you need to know before you try it

While more and more information is available about menstrual cups, the situation is slightly different for menstrual discs.

There are women who ask themselves: “ Are the menstrual pads the product I've been waiting for? “, and for them, and for those who want to know more about our new product launched exclusively by Femi.Eko®, we have created this material.

In this article you will find out:

  • What is the difference between Femi.Eko® menstrual disc and menstrual cup?
  • How to insert and remove the menstrual pad
  • How to reuse the menstrual pad safely
  • What are the benefits of using the menstrual disc?
  • Disadvantages and warnings

What is the difference between Femi.Eko® menstrual pads and menstrual cups?

Even the names of the two products show the big difference in design.

The calyx has the conical, goblet-like shape, while the disc resembles a membrane.

The design is not the only thing that sets them apart. The location is also different.

While the menstrual cup is not pushed very high into the vagina, where it will create the specific vacuum, the menstrual disc must be oriented as high as possible. It remains open as a circle and rests on the pubic bone.

Here is another important difference, especially for women who have had an aversion to the menstrual cup precisely because they have heard about its specific vacuum.

The menstrual pad does NOT create a vacuum.

The edge is slightly thicker so it stays firmly in place and remains open in the correct shape to collect menstrual blood.

How do you insert and remove the menstrual pad?

When we talk about a menstrual pad, we are talking about a reusable intimate product. It is inserted into the body like tampons or menstrual cups.

The special feature of this truly innovative product is that it positions itself on the diagonal of the vaginal opening and collects menstruation much higher up in the vagina.

Usually tampons or menstrual cups are inserted straight in. They take up space in the vagina, and therefore it is completely contraindicated to have sex while wearing these products.

The menstrual disc instead sits open like a circle that rests on the pubic bone. This is precisely why it can be worn during sex (it does not take up space in the vagina!).

To insert the menstrual pad correctly, follow the steps below:

STEP 1: Hygiene is important whenever we talk about genitals and more than that! Therefore, wash your hands thoroughly before using the counter.

STEP 2: Fold the Femi.Eko® Menstrual Disc in half. If this is your first time using a disc, it will help you breathe. Be aware that it is normal to give your body time to get used to a new product.

STEP 3: Hold the disc tightly between your thumb and forefinger. Once you've passed the entrance to the vagina, continue pushing the disc (still keeping it tight). Push it towards the coccyx. The disc is placed behind the pubic bone (schema de mai jos va clarifica sistemas).

Once you get the disc positioned correctly (you can't feel it, it doesn't bother you), you can keep it for up to 12 hours, depending on the flow.

We recommend setting a reminder if you think you'll forget you have the disc on (yes, it's very easy to forget, you'll see:). As with all other menstrual hygiene products, it is not recommended to use them for longer than 12 hours.

The reason is hygienic reasons and not blood collection capacity.

Although menstrual pads have not been linked to toxic shock syndrome, as with any menstrual product, it is advisable to maintain proper behavior when using them.

How do you know if your menstrual cycle is full?

As with menstrual cups, learn to recognize the signs that tell you this.

Spotting, a feeling of being full or frequent urination can be signs that it is time to empty your menstrual pad.

We recommend that you have a backup for protection when you are still learning how to use the product properly.

When it's time to remove the menstrual pad, follow these steps:

STEP 1: To remove the disc, choose a time when you feel relaxed.

Remember: the disc cannot disappear anywhere. You should figure it out! Insert your finger into your vagina and reach in, then grasp the special ring on the disc.

Grasp the ring and pull out the washer. Because the discs are positioned differently, you can pull gently without fear of causing the suction cup to suck.

If you can't reach the disk, you can use your muscles to push it. Just like you would if you had to go to the bathroom.

STEP 2: Drain the disc (we recommend doing this in the shower or over the toilet as you may spill the collected blood). Rinse it thoroughly and wash it with neutral soap. Then you are ready to use it again.

STEP 3: When the cycle is complete, wash the disc, sterilize it and store it in the special Femi.Eko ® bag that you received with your order.

How to recycle your menstrual pad safely

It is important to know that the Femi.Eko® menstrual pad must be sterilized at the beginning and end of each period.

You can sterilize the disc by boiling it in water for 10 minutes, but no longer than 20 minutes. Make sure the slice remains under water during cooking!

If it is not the first time you use a menstrual pad during your period (and you have already sterilized it at the beginning), you can disinfect it (with a disinfecting gel recommended for intimate care). You can also use a disinfecting cloth, but it must be labeled for intimate use. Otherwise, you risk irritating the mucous membrane in the vagina by adding chemicals to the body.

So:

  • Always sterilize the disc at the beginning and end of menstruation
  • Store the menstrual pads in their pouch or in a safe place where there is no risk of contamination with perfumes, creams or other chemicals.
  • DO NOT use disinfectants or soaps for cleaning that are not intended for the intimate area

What are the benefits of using the menstrual disc?

The list of benefits that a menstrual pad provides is by no means small!

Therefore, this product is already popular, even though it has been released relatively recently. In fact, it has been one of the most anticipated products that our users have asked for over and over again!

One of the reasons women love the menstrual disc is the freedom they feel because of it.

The disc eliminates the discomfort of wearing an absorbent material because it does not contain plastic, does not flake, does not stick to pubic hair, does not smell or allow odor formation.

In addition:

  • Can be worn for up to 12 hours (which means you can spend one day of your period checking twice a day that everything is okay)
  • Suitable for all types of cervix
  • Provides protection regardless of flow
  • Can be refilled for up to 5 years
  • You can have sex while wearing it
  • Can be worn if you have an IUD
  • Prevents bacterial growth and is easy to carry
  • Environmentally friendly and sustainable

Is this the perfect product?

For women who want convenience, total freedom of movement and are no longer dependent on having to pay monthly for menstrual hygiene, this product is very close to perfection.

In addition, we must not forget that by using it, you prevent the creation of mountains of waste and you really protect the environment!

But the menstrual disc also has a few disadvantages that are worth being aware of. Among them:

  • Not suitable for teenagers (girls at first period)
  • When you take it off, you may get stained IF you are not on the toilet or in the shower
  • The discs can empty themselves when you use the toilet (their contents end up in the toilet with the urine). This phenomenon is called self-dumping. When this happens, it may be necessary to rearrange the menstrual disc.

Self-dumping is not mandatory (some women experience it occasionally, while others do not at all – because some women reposition the disc on their own, while others have to reposition it after self-dumping)

What you should also know is that:

  • We do not recommend that you use the Femi.Eko® disc for more than 12 hours.
  • You should not use harmful chemicals to clean the menstrual pads, such as vinegar, tea tree oil, antibacterial soap, common hand sanitizers, hydrogen peroxide and other household remedies.
  • If you experience fever or nausea during use, you must stop using the menstrual disc

Do not use the Femi.Eko® menstrual pad if you have a bacterial infection or candidiasis and replace it immediately if:

– you used it while you had candidiasis or a vaginal infection that was discovered later

– dropped it in the toilet

– you notice a sticky film or powder on top of it.

You should discuss the use of discus with your doctor if:

  • you had STS
  • have recently undergone a gynecological operation, given birth or had a miscarriage
  • have a vaginal infection
  • you have never had intercourse and are concerned about keeping your hymen intact
